The University of Bordeaux 1 is a multidisciplinary organization covering all the fields of science and technology areas including research and teaching aspects. The two laboratories namely UMR 5255 ISM and UMR 5805 EPOC are French governmental research units shared between 2 institutions, University Bordeaux 1 & CNRS, "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique". Their staffs are shared between the two institutions. In that respect the University is responsible for human resources in the case of university staff. The University is also the institution responsible for the equipment and, experimental and laboratory facilities, which are maintained with the objective of high-quality research within the various thematic fields. The University is also strongly involved in transfer of knowledge based mainly on the courses related to the various degrees (undergraduate, masters, PhD …) that it offers to students.

Partner Skills

The unit has developed pluridisciplinary skills related to analytical chemistry, ecotoxicology and ecophysiology in aquatic ecosystems, and have experience in:

- Study of biogeochemical cycles and toxic impacts of inorganic and organic pollutants; 
- Development of analytical tools for the determination of chemical pollutants; 
- Development of passive samplers; 
- Development of an integrative online biosensor;
- Study of the toxic effects of organic and trace metals pollutants (from organismic to cellular and genetic levels, including embryo-, geno-, and repro-toxicity); 
- Study of the interactions between contamination process and physiological status; 
- Pollution biomonitoring in pilot estuarine and coastal sites; 
- Risk assessment in aquatic ecosystems using a multi-parametric approach (bioassays, biomarkers, chemical analyses);
- Ecophysiology;
- National and international expertise for decision making at governmental levels;
- Communication and transfer of knowledge.
The units have participated in many programs at national and international levels in the last 10 years including more than 10 EU research projects and more than 10 national French projects dealing with environmental sciences ("Biological effects of environmental pollution in marine coastal ecosystems" (BEEP); "Screening method for water data information in support of the implementation of the water framework directive (SWIFT-WFD); Ecotoxicological and economical liability of eel exposed to seasonal and global change-induced O2-depletion and pollution in estuaries (ANR VMC EEL-scope)). The sophisticated equipment of the units offers suitable analytical and experimental facilities for trace level determinations and chemical toxicity assessment. They have strong collaborations with public agencies responsible for water quality (French Water Agencies, IFREMER). They are also involved in national and international expertises and have published more than 150 papers in the field since 2005.
Participation in the Work Plan
The University will participate in activity 6 "Indicators - Monitoring", and will also contribute to activity 7 "Decision Supporting System - Case studies". 
The two laboratories will carry out studies on the water and sediment quality in harbours, using in situ testing, in situ monitoring of the organic pollutants; and characterization of the contamination and the toxicity of collected samples (water, sediment and biota). They will deploy modern tools in harbours, such as integrative passive samplers and an online biosensor but also integrative toxicity bioassays.
We will provide a case study on the port of Bordeaux. 
The University will be also implied in activity 8 "Communication" participating actively to the dissemination of the information and findings related to the project.
